The Simulation and Implementation of a Solution for Compensation at Power Sources

The paper deals with problems related to the improvement of power quality of the energy supplied to the national energy system by a high-capacity power group. Relations characterizing the non-sinusoidal waveforms of three-phase voltages and currents are presented. Preliminary evaluations revealed the existence of a significant distorting regime in the excitation circuit of the power group when a different excitation system (static) started to be used. A system dedicated to the compensation of non-sinusoidal regimes, relying on active filtering, was proposed and implemented by authors. Preliminary original simulations were made firstly using MATLAB/Simulink. Several compensation solutions were considered (current harmonics compensation with no compensation of reactive power along the fundamental harmonic, compensation of reactive power along the fundamental harmonic without current harmonics compensation and compensation of both current harmonics and of reactive power along the fundamental harmonic). Based on the simulations results, one selected test was made with the implemented active filter, considering the same inputs and solutions as in the case of simulations. It was proven that improvements were obtained relative to the operation of the power group. There is no specialty standard for power sources and therefore more studies are needed to issue a reliable one.
