Five-phase induction motor design using an analytic method and finite element analysis

The induction motor has a history of over 130 years, this vast experience has led to standardized values for many design parameters such as motor size, electric and magnetic properties as well as mechanical and thermal values. The authors propose an algorithm for the optimal design of an induction motor with a squirrel cage rotor with given input data. Based on a number of constraints that can be introduced, the algorithm computes an optimal solution for the sizing of the motor, in terms of geometry details as well as electromagnetic properties. A five-phase induction motor is designed and finite element analysis is performed to test the predicted performances.
