Thermal Influence of a Variable Temperature Insert on the High-Temperature Superconductor Coils of a Conduction Cooled High Magnetic Field Generator

This paper presents the results of numerical modeling of the temperature of a YBCO-type high-temperature superconducting (HTS) winding of an electromagnet that generates a magnetic field with a maximum magnetic flux density of 5 T. The electromagnet is made in a Helmholtz configuration, with double pancake-type coils, with an outer diameter of 200 mm and an inner diameter of 80 mm. Inside the central area of the electromagnet is placed a cell with the sample exposed to the magnetic field, which has a variable temperature in the range of 4.2 ... 300 K. The winding and the measuring cell are cooled with a closed operating cycle Gifford-McMahon (G-M) type cryocooler. The change in the temperature of the HTS winding is studied as a function of the temperature of the measuring cell, which can vary between 4.2 K and 300 K.
