Numerical Modelling of Thermoelectric Energy Harvesting from Industrial Compressor Waste Heat

The paper proposes a realistic approach to thermoelectric energy harvesting from the waste heat produced by industrial processes. Specifically, the temperatures recorded on a twin-screw compressor are introduced in the numerical simulations conducted for a thermoelectric module. The simulated module geometry respects the overall dimensions of the physical thermoelectric generators acquired and employs several interconnected n-type and p-type bismuth telluride couples for a more proper evaluation than simulating a single pair. The electric output is provided in the datasheets of commercial modules for unachievable temperature differences between the hot and cold sides. This paper reflects the actual electric power that is to be expected in the upcoming physical applications of micro energy harvesting from industrial machinery.
